Strip chats to the founder of We Are Handsome

With our new collection of We Are Handsome active wear just launching at Strip, we wanted to find out a little bit more about the rise of the ‘athleisure’ trend and the story behind this sassy Australian brand. We caught up with Founder and Creative Director of We Are Handsome, Jeremy Somers, to talk athleisure clothing, inspiration and their trade secrets. Take a look here!

How do you feel about the rise of athleisure wear  for 2016? (The new identity for gym clothes)
We’re seeing a lot more variation and creativity this year. Marles and panels are very prominent and we see active customers starting to care much more about performance aspects of their gear.

Describe the person who wears We Are Handsome? What’s their style? What do they stand for?
She’s confident in herself, her body, her abilities. She strives to be stronger & healthier in body and spirit.

Who inspires you and why?

We’re really inspired by willpower – ours and that of our WAH family. We’re thrilled when someone has the willpower to get up early to better themselves, sweat it out and pursue health goals.

Your active wear consists of a lot of bold, bright colourful prints. What are the stories/inspirations behind each of these?
We’ve always been print focussed – it reflects who we are and who our customer is – Bold, strong, colourful, full of life.

Why do you choose the materials you use? What are the benefits of using these materials?

We’re focussed on making the best quality active product we can, incorporating every day, high-performance fabrics and construction so, no matter what activity you take part it, your activewear holds up and lasts. No weak stitches, see-through pants here. We’ve developed an exclusive fabric – FLEXICOOOLTM to do just this for us.

What product from your current ‘HEAT FIVE’ leisure wear range is your best seller so far?
Our high waisted leggings are top sellers, far and above most other pieces. We’ve printed the inside of the band so they can be turned down post-workout, to a regular waist legging.

We can see brands such as Seafolly introducing workout clothes.  How do you stand out against your competitors?
We differentiate ourselves with our performance products, and our aesthetic – prints that are developed specifically for activewear.

  • Absolutely amazing wax with Martina today. The whole experience from Terri on reception to the treatment was fantastic and I cannot recommend this salon enough. Having recently undergone extensive surgery for Crohn’s disease, I was nervous for my first wax in a few years and Martina was just amazing she listened to me and made me feel totally relaxed and in safe hands. The wax they use is fantastic and you barely feel a thing. Can’t wait to come back!

You always make it as comfortable as possible and I really, really appreciate your hygiene standards. The things I’ve seen at other salons make me cringe, but your therapists are meticulously clean.
