With the Olympics and Paralympics now behind us and darker nights on the horizon, we’re in serious danger of losing our gymspiration! If like us, you need a bit of a kick in the butt, you’re in the right place. As well as catching up with the super fit models at Bjorn Borg to find out what keeps them going, we’ve put together our top tips on how to keep active and get yourself to the gym!
- Create a new habit with rewards: Something as simple as treating yourself to a coffee on the way home from the gym or catching up with a friend after a class can be enough to eventually train your brain to anticipate the reward and crave the lead up (ie going to the gym)
- Invest in some new gear: Looking good can do wonders for motivation…. you’ll be keen to show off your new clothes and since the gym is the best place for gym clothes, you have no excuses! Check out our new Bjorn Borg collection here >
- Buddy up: You’re bound to have a friend who’s keen to get fit as well so why not turn your Thursday night drinks into HIIT, Spin or Barre instead?
- Get a new playlist: Put aside an hour on a Sunday afternoon to pull together all your favourite new tracks – whether on Itunes or Spotify there are so many ways to make a playlist and find new music to boost your mind and mood
- Set goals – want to be in that bodycon dress by Christmas? Or be able to get through a full hour of Bikram yoga? Break it down into weekly goals and you will be able to track how far you’ve come
How do the professionals keep their resolve?
Meet Jarrod Scott, Model and Triathlon athlete:
WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT WORKING OUT?
Being able to eat anything I want. I usually have like fries five nights a week, if anyone wants to know. But also you feel great, it’s mentally satisfying. Sometimes if I’m feeling unmotivated, I work out with my friends. We push each other and usually I have to keep up with them because they’re really fit. Other than that I like to train alone. I just go off and do my thing, find new places.
WHAT IN THE WORLD MOTIVATES A PERSON TO DO TRIATHLONS?
I just like to see how far my body can go. Some days I’ll ride my bike, I’ll ride a 150 kilometers and I’ll try to do it on an empty stomach. Just to see, I don’t know, just to test myself. It gives me something to work towards. I have a lot of spare time. I usually just eat, and if I eat and don’t exercise, it’s usually not good in this industry.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT STAYING FIT?
There’s a big misconception about people that have a good body, and people that are fit and functional. Every athlete works towards a different goal. There’s this huge stigma about having a perfect body, like a professional athlete or a wrestler. But if you look at a sumo wrestler for instance, they’re absolutely amazing, this huge force to be reckoned with. But their bodies aren’t considered to be the best even though it is the best for them. When I do triathlons, you judge a person within the first three seconds of seeing them and think ”oh look at this guy, he’s nothing”. Then he passes you in the first five minutes and you never see him again.
Meet Betty Adewole, model and short distance sprinter:
WHAT IS YOUR MOST FAVOURITE TYPE OF WORKOUT?
I like yoga, but I think running’s my favourite. It makes me feel awake, alive. I’m automatically happier after I finish running. I just feel more energized, more positive. I feel it in my whole body, so I know that I’ve worked out whereas sometimes if I do some other things I won’t feel it in my whole body. And I sweat more as well, it’s like I can see and feel the results of the effort I put in.
WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT WORKING OUT?
My mood and my energy. How I feel afterwards. If I wake up and I’m in a bad mood and I go for a run, I just I feel better, stronger and more energized afterwards.
ARE THE CLOTHES IMPORTANT?
Yeah, really important. The underwear, the tops I’m wearing, Trainers are really important for comfort. I’ll wear leggings if it’s cold, and maybe a fleece or a hoodie.
