How to deal with Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown Hair Advice

Ingrown hairs are sadly a consequence or trying to achieve smooth skin. But they don’t have to be!

Terri (our Head of Education and Senior Therapist) has detailed a few simple steps that you can follow to ensure those pesky ingrown stay away.

But first.. what actually are ingrown hairs?

An ingrown hair is when the hair grows back into the skin instead of growing outwards. When this happens it causes the hair to be trapped and develop an itchy red bump that can be uncomfortable.

Why do we get ingrown hairs?

The reason hair removal (and shaving in particular) can cause ingrown hairs, is that when the hair is cut the end is sharper and therefore easier to pierce the skin. It’s more common in people with coarse or curly hair as the hair grows back inwards rather that outwards. Dead skin can also clog the follicle and block the hair from coming out.

How to stop ingrown hairs

  • Exfoliate, exfoliate exfoliate! If you don’t already then you really need to start! Regular exfoliation (twice a week) will remove any bacteria and oil residue from the follicle so the pore will no longer be blocked and will mean the hair can be free to take it’s natural course.
  • Do not use a mitt Any accessory that has been sitting in the bath or shower is unhygienic and will gather bacteria. We recommend to use a scrub on it’s own without an accessory (see next tip!). If you do really want to use a mitt then we recommend buying two pairs and using them on rotation (washing them after every single use). Loofers don’t work at all so don’t even bother with these!
  • Use an exfoliation scrub on dry skin. When you use a scrub on very wet skin then the scrub will just glide off, will not be effective and you see results. Use the scrub on dry or lightly damp skin in repetitive circular motions to get the blood circulation going.
  • Avoid harsh scrubs on sensitive areas. Avoid using harsh exfoliation and scrubs on your chest, face, backs of knees and anywhere that has a varicose vein or is extra sensitive. Use the scrub slowly and gently on wet skin on these areas and suggest an extra sensitive product like this light and creamy scrub by Lycon.
  • Continue using your salon recommended products, even with a hairy area! In lockdown and with hairier skin, it’s tempting to think that you don’t need to bother with exfoliation, but this isn’t true! Continue to exfoliate as part of your weekly routine and you’ll see the benefits when you do come back in for your wax appointment. We recommend this anti-ingrown solution by Lycon.
  • Tea Tree is your friend as it has anti-bacterial properties and will prevent the ingrown hairs from growing. Why not add it to your routine as a shower gel like this one from Lycon? Or even post-shower as a body lotion!

Follow these steps and you’ll be sure to see the results within a couple of weeks!

  • Got a Brazilian here and it’s the most painless waxing experience I’ve ever had. Also very good wax job, and she really made me feel relaxed and comfortable too… which is not easy when you’re half naked getting waxed! Will def go back.

  • My fourth wax at Strip and as always a positive experience! All the ladies are so lovely, professional and knowledgeable, doing whatever they can to ensure you get the best results and have the best experience – I could not recommend Strip enough! Can’t wait to go back again!

  • This was my first Hollywood Wax and I was nervous. The reception staff were extremely helpful with my questions beforehand. Holly my waxing technician, was extremely friendly, helpful and really put me at ease. It hurt a little, but nothing to how I thought it was going to and it was over very quickly. Definitely will be coming back! Thank you to the whole team for a fantastic service!

  • Amazing hot wax as always! I’ve been coming to Strip for ages now and even though I’ve moved away from the area, I always make the journey because it’s more than worth it for a top class wax and as pain free an experience as a hot waxing can be. All the staff are always lovely and welcoming. Thanks ladies!

  • Absolutely amazing wax with Martina today. The whole experience from Terri on reception to the treatment was fantastic and I cannot recommend this salon enough. Having recently undergone extensive surgery for Crohn’s disease, I was nervous for my first wax in a few years and Martina was just amazing she listened to me and made me feel totally relaxed and in safe hands. The wax they use is fantastic and you barely feel a thing. Can’t wait to come back!

  • Honestly the best intimate waxing in London. Quick and as pain-free as it’s gonna get. My favourite therapist is Luciana – she’s such a pro and makes the whole experience easy and stress-free.

  • Hands down the best wax I have ever had. This was my first time going to Strip and there was no pain whatsoever and it was over so quickly! I have very sensitive skin and am always in pain whenever I get a wax however, I had none of these issues here! Will 100% be back.

  • This place is awesome. Every time I’ve come they have offered top notch service. They make me super comfortable, they are beyond friendly, and the wax is done to perfection. All of the Strip locations are great but I think the City location is the best for customer service and friendliness. Highly recommend everyone go here for!!

  • As it was my first waxing I was quite nervous. There was no need to be. The staff were friendly and professional. Eva put me at ease by explaining everything. She did an amazing treatment, virtually pain free. Will definitely be back. Thank you Eva and all the staff .
