Did you know that 80% of skin ageing (we’re talking wrinkles, age spots and sagging) can be attributed to sun exposure? We’re all for a few laughter lines here and there but a glowing, youthful complexion is pretty high on our wish list. A good SPF can make all the difference in protecting your skin from the sun, however now all face creams are born equal! We spent a lot of time trialling different brands and now exclusively stock Heliocare – an advanced range of face and body SPF formulas that protect and perfect the skin.
What does an SPF do?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor – these creams work to stop or limit the amount of UV rays that reach (and subsequently damage) your skin.
There are two types of UV radiation: UVA and UVB.
UVA rays are present all year round – even on cloudy days, but you won’t get burnt or tanned from them so you may not be aware of the photo-damage being done. These rays penetrate the inner levels of the skin with long-lasting damage.
UVB rays are more prevalent on sunny days and are the ones that damage the outermost layer of the skin causing us to become tanned (or burnt), so you need to look for a sun cream that protects against both UVA and UVB damage.
If the skin is not regularly protected against the sun, photo damage can occur resulting in:
- The breakdown of collagen (the ‘framework’ of the skin) which can cause sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles
- Damage to the upper levels of the skin which gives a leathery appearance
- Damage to the DNA of cells which can affect their function and in certain cases lead to skin cancer
- Raised melatonin levels (the dark pigment in our skin) which can cause patchy skin tone, dark/liver spots and moles
How can you protect your skin?
Heliocare is a range of sun care that is clinically proven to protect the skin from environmental damage and help prevent the signs of ageing. Each product promises broad spectrum protection (which means it defends the skin against a wider range of rays) and contains moisturising ingredients to nourish and improve skin condition.
Heliocare uses a unique ingredient called Fernblock® which has been extracted from plants in Central America and has been used years to treat skin conditions. It is super rich in anti-oxidants and can help repair the skin and reduce photo damage.
The Heliocare range comes in many different textures and even offers colour options to give the coverage of a foundation with added skincare benefits. It is also important to note that you should re-apply your SPF regularly as it can start to wear off after just a couple of hours (this is true off most sun creams – unless you have an ‘all day’ formula).

Strip favourites:
Anna, Marketing Director: I love the 360 range – in particular the mineral fluid. The 360 products contain additional ingredients such as Vitamin C and green tea which is great to energise and detox the skin. I am getting married later this year so am making sure I look after my skin to get that all important bridal glow on the day!
Jennie, Area Manager: My skin can be quite sensitive and burns easily so the SPF 50 makes Heliocare a great option for me. I use the XF gel daily as it makes a great base for makes and doesn’t irritate my skin
Ania, Buying Assistant: I love the colour compact for touch ups through the day. It’s great having a foundation/SPF in one that I can keep re-applying so I know that my SPF isn’t wearing off throughout the day. It comes in two colours and blends really easily.
